Nut Case

Sounds like a good idea to me

It strikes me as so odd that people proactive about their health get called "Health Nuts". I get called it all the time. "Well, of course you eat that way, wash your face that way, etc. You are a health nut."

Almost as befuddling are the signs hanging over the small corner of an immense grocery store that say "Nutrition Section". So...what's in the rest of the store? Mostly chemicals I would guess. Unhealthy stuff for the non-health nuts?

Mark Bittman wrote a piece recently that was the front page of the Sunday Review section of The New York Times. Name of the article? "Bad Food. Tax It." Here are some stats from the article:

 "20% increase in the price of sugar-y drinks nationally would result in 20% decrease in consumption which in the next decade could prevent about 1.5 million Americans from becoming obese and decrease cases of diabetes by 400,000, saving about $30,000,000,000."

Staggering stats. Marvelous idea  The first sentence in his article reads, "What will it take to get Americans to change our eating habits?"

For starters...not calling names. Not making the pursuit of health a fringe idea, an inaccessible goal for most. I found this quote on a coffee mug it.

Get Slushed!

This week is a little topsy turvy...lots of balls in the air. Which brings me round to food thoughts about melon balls and melons in general. The baby watermelons looked so great this weekend at the Farmers' Market. And, while looking up some "green" tips for a parties, I came across this recipe from Danny Seo...The King of Green. Looks really del-ish...and also includes another weekend star: peaches. Both are very perishable and so without further fuss...

Farmers' Market Peaches

Danny's Frozen Watermelon Martinis

1 large, organic watermelon
1-2 ounces of vodka
ripe peach
sugar (optional)

Cut the watermelon in half. On a parchment-lined baking sheet, scoop out a single layer of watermelon balls. Reserve the melon rinds.  Freeze the watermelon balls for several hours until completely frozen (Any you don't use for this drink, pop in another like an ice cube. Also perfect for that morning shake). Place the frozen chunks in a blender, add 1-2 ounces of vodka. Blend on highest speed until slushy. Add pieces of rip peach or sugar to sweeten if desired. Serve immediately.
